About us

Kids@art is the educational and charitable arm of Oxfordshire Artweeks (OAEC) and was set up in 1999 to run artists' residencies in local authority schools. We have since run over 120 successful residencies, reaching over 4,000 children and their communities.

What is so special about us?

"Not many pupils can say they have built a living classroom in 5 days! Some achievement!" A Kids@art residency is about working on an extraordinary project as a whole school. Felt, clay, mosaic, any material, even recycled junk: as well as his expertise, the artist often brings in a whole new way of looking at things for pupils and teachers alike. The same Oxford teacher went on to write how "particular pupils who usually were very diffident and withdrawn, bubbled with excitement and loved talking about their work." Above all, we hope that all children taking part with Kids@art will be amazed at what they find they can achieve. Creative achievement means new confidence.

Who benefits?

The children for all of the above reasons.
Their teachers through exposure to new art forms and methods and materials which the artist utilizes.
The school as a focus of recognition within the local community.
The artists for the work and extension of their experience.
The parents and the local community for a publicly recognised achievement

The thought behind it

Creativity can touch every element of our learning. Art allows children to express themselves in a unique way, and is vital for their emotional and creative development. Yet all too often, it is squeezed out by the National Curriculum or school budget pressures just when it is most needed.
Kids@art steps in to provide the resources for schools to embark on a residency while encouraging artists to engage with the wider community.
